AI SEO and GEO: how to get your business cited by ChatGPT

More people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews for recommendations instead of scrolling search results. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is how you make sure your business is the answer they get.

  • AI for SMBs
  • AI SEO

Search is splitting in two. People still type queries into Google, but a growing share now ask an AI assistant directly: "who does invoice automation for small businesses in Houston?" The assistant reads the web, picks a few sources, and answers in a sentence or two. If your business is not in that answer, you are invisible to that customer, no matter how good your traditional ranking is.

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of getting cited in those AI answers. It overlaps with classic SEO but is not the same thing.

How AI answers actually get built

When someone asks an assistant a question, the model pulls from pages it can read and trust, then summarizes. To be one of those pages, your content has to be easy for a machine to parse and easy to quote.

That rewards a specific style: clear questions answered directly, facts stated plainly, structure a machine can follow. The rambling, keyword-stuffed page that sometimes worked for old SEO works against you here.

What to do about it

A few practical moves make a real difference:

  • Answer real questions directly. Use the question as a heading, then answer it in the first sentence. The FAQ blocks at the bottom of our own posts are there for exactly this reason.
  • State facts plainly. Specific, checkable claims get quoted. Vague marketing language gets skipped.
  • Add structured data. Schema markup tells engines what your page is: an article, a service, a business, a review. We add it to every page on this site.
  • Keep your basics clean. A fast, accessible, well-structured site is easier for both Google and AI crawlers to read. The two goals reinforce each other.
  • Be consistent across the web. Your name, location, and what you do should match across your site, your profiles, and any listings. Mixed signals make engines less confident citing you.

SEO and GEO are not a choice

You do not pick one. Strong traditional SEO still drives the rankings and links that AI engines learn from. GEO is the layer on top that makes your content quotable once they get there. Done together, the same clean, structured, honest content works for a search result and an AI answer.

This is the work we do under our AI SEO and GEO service, and we build this site to the same standard we would build yours.

FAQ

What is the difference between SEO and GEO? SEO aims to rank in search results. GEO aims to get your business cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. They share foundations but reward slightly different content styles.

Does GEO replace SEO? No. Traditional SEO still feeds the rankings and links that AI engines rely on. GEO builds on top of it.

How do I know if it is working? Ask the assistants the questions your customers would, and watch whether you appear. Track referral traffic from AI tools as that reporting matures.
